Multi-Piano Christmas Festival - 2020 edition

Can you believe we're already thinking about the Christmas Festival again?! For those of you just joining in, each year our local Piano Teachers' League hosts a Multi-Piano and Guitar Christmas Festival wherein area students prepare holiday duets, we line 8 pianos up on stage, and students & teachers perform these duets in a lively piano ensemble. This is a highly anticipated event each year, and we have been brainstorming how to carry on with this favorite performance in 2020.

Given the caution around COVID this year, naturally things are going to be a little different. But we piano teachers have brainstormed and come up with an idea that we are pretty excited about that will continue to give your students the opportunity to get ensemble piano experience, AND we will be able to avoid large gatherings and do our very best to keep everyone healthy. So, here's the current plan:

Students will prepare their leveled duets in lessons as usual. On December 11th & 12th, we will have the groups meet, one group at a time, at the auditorium at Central Christian College to rehearse and then to record their group's performance. Pianos will be sanitized between groups, we'll be sanitizing hands before we sit down, and masks will be worn by all if that is still the local ordinance. Parents are invited to stay while their child is recording to provide some applause for our video recording. The auditorium is very large, so grabbing seats far enough apart to have appropriate social distancing shouldn't be too tricky.

Then, the videos from each group will be assembled and published the following weekend, just in time for the Christmas Break. We can all make some time with our families to sit down and watch the performances, and encourage the hard work each piano kid did to put it together. And the really cool thing about this is we'll have a well-edited version of the performance perfect for sharing with friends and family all over who will be excited to watch your piano kid shine in this extra special ensemble performance.

As we all know, 2020 has been a lot, and we are all finding creative ways to carry on while caring for our community in the ways we need to. What I like to focus on for this particular performance is that we will still get to make music together, students will get ensemble experience, and we'll have a beautiful video of the performances to share our holiday music with friends and family this Christmastime!
